Released from the law!

Romans 7:6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.

In the photo above, Moses is holding the written code of bondage. Born again believers have died to the law through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. They have been released from the law and are under the ministry of the indwelling Holy Spirit. Believers are led by the Spirit and have the law written on their hearts. They are regenerated and through faith in their Lord and savior Jesus Christ are justified and adopted as sons of God. They are in Christ and no longer controlled by the law of sin and death as Jesus has fulfilled the righteous requirements of the law on their behalf. Believers are also given the fruit of the Spirit as they look to grow in grace, sanctification, and Spirit led service. The old way of the written code is no longer applicable to Spirit led believers because Jesus has set them free and when the son sets you free, you are free indeed.

Praise our triune God that he provided everything he requires for those redeemed by the blood of the lamb. Christians should look to grace, the Holy Spirit and the teachings of Jesus in their sanctification and not the law.

Good teaching. Spot on.

Thanks Wayne for the last few posts on the law. It's a deep subject. And there are many views within the Church on how the law is to be understood.

Don,
Yes it is deep in one sense and I am learning as I work through these passages. Certainly the ethical teachings of the ten commandments are still valid and yet here Paul tells us to serve in the new way of the Spirit instead of the old way of the written code.

It just seems to me that the new way of the spirit involves a heart response from a conviction from the indwelling Holy Spirit, whereas the old way flows from a legal duty from a human being in and of himself. One is from Spirit led grace and the other is from man initiated works.

The old way was always the new way, in one sense.
In other words, it was always God's mercy and grace working in the heart. It was always faith that pleased God. Before the Cross, it was for the Cross, and after the Cross, it is for the Cross.
We understand today, because we see clearly.
The saints in the OT, saw the mercy of God without the complete understanding, but they trusted in His mercy still the same.

This is how I see it.
The OT was a shadow. Christ is the shadow manifested.

Don,
I agree. Yet, even with the full revelation that we now have, some seem to want to base their salvation on their works such as "I am saved because I try to obey the ten commandments." God did save a remnant in OT who through God's mercy looked forward with faith to a redeemer.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I may do a couple of more before I finish.
